Locking database cleanup?

They did change it some years ago, after pressure from various GPL
vendors IIRC.

which in my eyes is a free software license, quite similar to GPL in
spirit but much shorter and easier to understand.

Sleepycat says regarding GPL:

Sleepycat's open source license is compatible with the GPL, so GPL'ed
software can incorporate Berkeley DB, Berkeley DB XML or Berkeley DB
Java Edition without violating the terms of either license.

FSF says:

Berkeley Database License (aka the Sleepycat Software Product License)

This is a free software license and is compatible with the GNU GPL.
