Does it only remedy the memory usage problem, or the correctness
problem as well?

See http://samba.org/ftp/unpacked/junkcode/os2_delete.c for a test
program that was previously failing on some BSD systems. Perhaps this
was fixed a while ago, but it might be worth re-testing after the
recent patch.
