It does cover pretty much everything we need as far as I've seen - testing 
whether C headers are present, whether give code compiles, finding libraries and
functions. Anything in particular you were missing?

I'll add a SConstruct file to SVN shortly that does a simple
compile so that we can work on both systems in parallel.

Changing the configure stuff over later would be a good idea. I was
initially planning on doing it all at once, but I guess you're right
in that we could leave some of the nasty bits (such as the developer
flags) in the configure script for now.
