Samba3 is relatively insensitive to these parameters for most
deployments, whereas they are quite critical in Samba4. So if someone
gets them wrong in Samba3 then they usually end up with a working
system.

In Samba4 we use the ADS layout for the SAM, and that layout changes
quite a lot depending on your server role. So if you get it wrong then
Samba4 fails to work at all. We've had quite a few people try Samba4
and fail to get a working server because these parameters have been
wrong.

The original point of separating the two parameters was that in the
early days of Samba we could be a domain master because we'd worked
out how to do that in nmbd, but we could not be a domain logon
server, as we didn't have the necessary code in smbd. So we had two
parameters as we had no choice. That reason has been dead for a very
long time.

Cheers, Tridge
