Ok, check out the latest version and try it now.  I've added including
<ctype.h> which is apparently included in the ldb-only includes.h but not in
the top-level includes.h.  (I'm currently doing a fresh build from top-level
to ensure that nothing else is broken.)  This probably requires a configure
check. 

BTW, that file is not used by anything other than the in-progress development
of the ldb sqlite3 backend right now, so if the current checkin does not
resolve the problem, you can delete that file from the generated makefile for
the time being.
