smbd process dies after SMBunlink

Samba 3.0.6 server with slow (P3/260) Windows 2000 (SP4) client. Log of
deletion of 60GB file macdata.bkf (ntbackup file type) by simply
pressing delete key in a file explorer window shown below:

We never hear from [smbd] process 9341 again. It enters "uninterruptible
sleep" state and has to be killed with
a -KILL. The file explorer window stops responding for about 90secs then
displays a "Cannot delete macdata:
Cannot find the specified file" error message.
I tried reproducing this problem on a few of our testlab PCs but didn't
have any luck. Problem only seems to occur on one of our customer's PCs.
However, it looks like a SAMBA bug so I thought I might as well send
this email in.
