Testing my exclusions goes well, commands like

smbclient \\\\oops2\\Downloads -U backup -d2 -TXqcar - '\a*' '\*.pdf' '\sp?m*' '\wallp*' '\gert*' '\*.exe' > x.tar

do what I want them to.

I will fiddle around more with various patterns ...
