OT: Need a new laptop for mobile CIFS hacking

This is off-topic, but...

I'm a poor CIFS geek.  The "spare" laptop that I've been using for years
is starting to wear out.  Keys falling off, CDRom drive busted, etc.  The 
unit belongs to my employer, and they've been asking to get it back for a 
while (they refurb and then sell them).

So... I'm looking for something that runs Linux well, is fairly cheap, &
holds up to travel.

Clues?
