client crash recovery in the presence of locks

Hi,

If a client crashes when it has open files with share mode locks on the 
files and perhaps even byte range locks, and then stays down for a while, 
what is to prevent those locks from hanging around for a long time?

Specifically, if the client opened the file, took out the locks, and then 
was quiet for a while, and crashed during the quiet time?
