Yes I know. I was wrongly under the impression that the LDAP
specification would require ISO8859-1 (because most LDAP clients don't
convert the password to UTF-8). Of course Unicode is the only real
solution here.

Perhaps it would be a good idea to add a small note to smb.conf about
the behaviour of 'ldap passwd sync' so that non-US people are prepared
for the problems that may araise with other LDAP clients like pam_ldap.
