Tridge fixed up spinlocks recently - his commit message was on the lines
of 'spinlocks are still not a good idea, but at least they now work'. 
It would be interesting to see if you still get errors with current CVS.

As a general issue, spinlocks are dangerous as nobody is validating
them, and if an smbd dies, nobody ever removes it.  But as you have
noticed, they can certainly be fast...
