Yes, I'm happy with this patch, I was thinking I would
merge it into the 3.0 and HEAD trees.

Ok, if we want to make other changes let's get this done asap
so that we're not making too many changes to the SAM formats.

If I merge this into 3.0, we then have a base we can add the
changes to (and so long as we don't ship 3.0.1 we can still
make changes to the internal format and leave the version at
v1 until we release a new 3.0.1pre release).
