As a followup, I eventually deleted the .tdb files in /var/lib/samba/,
reinstalled printers in cupsys, etc., etc.

Currently, I do *not* see this problem.  My best guess is that I somehow
corrupted data in the .tdb files while trying to use a local package and
the imprints print driver install program (I think I omitted that I had
tried using that in my previous message).

I wish it was easier to guess what win* wants for printer drivers
though---I guess I need to become clairvoyant.
