Last week's "Windows Server 2003 better than Linux" test

Ironically, I happened to be working on Samba read performance
just before the Veritest test of Red Hat AS 2.1 and Samba 2.2.7

I notice that the write cache size wasn't set in Samba:
am I right in thinking that this **alone** should allow
a write speed improvement proportional to the stripe
width?
My measurement on a different but parallel configuration
shows a roughly tenfold speed difference for a 3-wide stripe
(admittedly on quite a fast set of disks!)

I am concerned about read speed, though: my customer has
to provide streaming video from a 7-wide stripe...
