I think we are going to have to take the stand that 

  * we cannot break backwards compatibility on a 
    minor dot release
  * we can break backwards comptibility within reason
    on a major release as long as
    - it is a necessary change and has a significant 
      payoff
    - the change is documented in the upgrade section 
      of the release notes

I guess I really should start working on the upgrade 
notes before we release the first beta.  Anyone want to help
me on this?
