The umask at smbd's startup is 077, but one of the first actions of
smbd is setting it to zero. Are there any user specific umask settings
for smbd?

"create mask" is default (i.e. 0744). But according to smb.conf(5) it
should have no effect on NT ACLs. Wait a minute ... it could explain why
temp files are being created group read only. :)

But not why owner write permissions are revoked with W2k clients, and
previous user and group privileges not being replicated with NT4 and WinXP
clients. (Despite log indicates that clients are trying to do so.)

"security mask" is default, too, i.e. 0777.
