I've had discussions regarding this with Jelmer over the weekend. He is
still merging style and content information between the HOWTO book and the
HOWTO Collection. This will take a week or two to sort out. It will also
require further software updates for libxml2, and libxslt2 as well as to
the db2latex style sheets.

Speaking personally, I can not wait for the day that the HOWTO book is
fully into CVS. Until then, Jelmer and I have legal obligations to keep
the book up to date. Some of the recent CVS changes in the samba-docs work
against that. This is making it more difficult to keep the two documents
in sync.

In essence, please note that the book style and format must remain
unchanged for the duration of our maintenance contract. The more that the
format and style of the HOWTO Collection changes that the more work we
have to do to met our obligations.

The impact of a recent change has been to reduce the page count from 741
to 680 pages. That creates a significant challenge to explain to
purchasers of more recent printings that a reduction in page count from
741 to 680 pages actually has more (and more up to date) information in
it. :)

Please make sure that all changes and updates to the samba-docs CVS tree
goes through either Jelmer or myself, otherwise we end up having to spend
a lot of time and effort to meet our publishing obligations. Specifically,
I own the legal responsibility towards Prentice Hall on behalf of the
Samba-Team. This is a responsibility that must be considered when changes
are made.

I am not complaining, just putting on record what some of the
considerations are. I agree that the HOWTO Collection must be produced in
a useable and professionally pleasing form, but please do not make any
changes without running them past Jelmer or myself so that our
responsibilities do not become impossible.

Cheers,
John T.
