More fun.  I've installed win2k in vmware, adding it to the samba domain 
in the install.  This machine (win2k sp4) works properly from the xp box 
in the trusted domain (same setup as I described earlier).  The other box 
(a real box running sp4 (i think) and previously a member of the trusted 
domain) still gives the account disabled message.  I am thinking now that 
it may be a security policy setting or something like that.  Now at least 
we know that a clean box does not exhibit this behavior.
