cifs and server-less unc

When IBM sold warp server, they had a great feature called domain
aliases --which allowed a domain wide name that pointed to the
standard unc (servername\sharename).  Is this the same functionality
provided by cifs? I noticed that cifs shares are created by
symlinks in the file system.  Seems this is ripe for a gui admin tool
like the IBM domain admin tool...
