This doesn't feel like the right place to be doing this.  Please don't mess
with this stuff until I've given it a very close look over.  (But yes, 
it is a problem we need to solve).

I'm worried about having two parallel development efforts in this area
and having nothing rock-solid to ship in 3.0, whenever that might be.
