with raw data kilobytes are NOT a good choice.
printers today accept many data formats.
the same image in postscript and jpeg use a really different amount of
bytes. And the ink used is the same.

You end having users really upset because you charge much more some than
others ... (we tested this solution unfortunately, the result was users
go to places where the thing is correctly computed).

If you have to give a service you can afford certainly a printer that do
return the number of pages printed and that is supported by CUPS (that
have the possibility to check number of printed pages from the printer).
