the bug in mentioned in the attached eMail is fixed with the release 

Another bug in pdb_nisplus.c which SEGV smbpasswd when adding the first 
entry to an empty table was resolved by Toomas Soome. This fix didn't 
appear in 2.2.4 and I'm unsure if it's in the cvs. It is simply changing 
line 1210 to nis_lookup instead of  nisp_get_nis_list.

The Makefile generated by configure won't work for me since I'm using gcc 
which doesn't know about -KPIC. I simply replaced all -KPIC with -fPIC. 

I'm thinking about moving to LDAP, but that is a lot harder to implement 
than NIS+.

This should all be fixed in 2.2.4.  Please retest.  Thanks.

Very few.  and it is maintained by people outside the Samba Team.
