No, I had joined the domain correctly. wbinfo -u worked, and, moreover, 
when I added 'name resolve order = wins host' to my smb.conf, wbinfo -t 
started working as well.

It was 2.2.3pre.

Take it from me, it was. I have now fixed my Win2K setup so that WINS is 
correctly configured, but I have also found a better set of heuristics for 
finding the DC. The issue was in translating the DC name into an IP 
address.
