The limit is in smbfs.

You need the 2.4.18 kernel patches from this page:
    http://www.hojdpunkten.ac.se/054/samba/

Apply the 00 and 01 patches to a clean, unpacked linux kernel 2.4.18
source tree. Build and install a new kernel from the patched source.

You also need to follow the instructions on patching samba. Details are on
the page.


You will have to build your own kernel and your own samba to get this
working. So if you are not familiar with how to do that you should
experiment with that first.

Both the samba and kernel packages come with documentation. In addition
you can find some helpful docs on http://www.linuxdoc.org/ (Kernel-HOWTO)
