TDBs and various other files?

I don't know much about these things, but I can add one piece to the
puzzle: locking.tdb is used to record whole-file locks, whereas
brlock.tdb is used to record byte-range locks (an SMB client updating
something like a database file can ask Samba for a lock on a part of a
file, while still allowing other clients access to other parts of the
file).
