I'm wondering if removing the 'null means get_global_sam_sid()'
behaviour would help with the linking issues?  That should remove the
need for things like winbind to link this stuff in.  

How does that sound?  We can write another convenience wrapper for
passdb use only, if required, but I'm not sure even that is really
required.
