WIN2K joining samba PDC

I have samba 2.2.3 running on Linux redhat 7.1.  Everything works fine
except when I try to get a WIN2K client to join the domain it tells me
"Credentials supplies conflict with exsisting set of credintials."  Now I
did the adduser machinename$ for the Linux password, and I did hte
smbpasswd -a -m machinename.  I don't know what I've done wrong.  Any body
have ideas?
