samba and windows xp

i am trying to connect my windows xp box to a school server - i know for windows 2000 we needed to download a samba patch to make it work - but downloading the 2000 patch doesnt' seem to work on xp.  is there any way to connect to the networkl (map network drives) using xp?  do you know if there are any samba xp patches available.  thank you so much for your help.
