I suggest the following :

1. start your server in log level 10 and unlimited log size

2. try to block your client on open
when blocked  DO NOT TOUCH YOUR CLIENT (dont kill any excel process)

3. smbstatus  and get the PID of your smbd

4. do an strace -p PID to a file

5. do a lsof -p PID to a file

post the smbstatus, lsof and strace here
dont post the smbd log (too big) on the list 
wait to be requested by someone
