service connection requests truncated by W2K client

I am running samba 2.0.10 on RedHat Linux 7 with domain authentication. I
have a user on a windows 2000 SP2, all latest patches, machine who today,
cannot load his profile, or run his login script. When I look at the error
logs for his machine, I see that the service names are being truncated by
one character. If I log on with his machine using another account, it's
fine. Note the username vbravo, I have had issues with his username before,
where he was unable to log on to the domain at any machine, but that was at
least a year ago, and quit, then magically started working again. His
account is valid, and once logged on, he can access the samba shares just
fine, manually.
