debian packages broken

For those of you using debian, you may wish to compile Samba yourself
rather than use the supplied binaries. The debian package includes a
completely incorrect patch to smbd/filename.c that breaks simple file
create operations in some cases (it makes Samba think that
non-existant files exist).

I have notified the debian maintainer, but if you are hitting basic
file operation problems with Samba on debian then please try compiling
Samba yourself.

I would also like to appeal to all package maintainers that if you
change the actual source code to Samba (as opposed to just compile
options) you also change the Samba version string. This package
identified itself as "samba-2.2.2" which it is *not*. A more accurate
description would be "samba-2.2.2-debian" which at least would mean
poeple like me don't spend hours tracking down a bug in a broken
distribution patch.

Cheers, Tridge
