Nameservices with rich query semantics such as LDAP are
good candiates for being implemented directly behind the
Samr RPC interface. Others (such as NIS) probably benefit
from something like passdb.

The Heimdal backend API is quite nifty in that it sort of
provides two levels of abstractions for backend providers --
check out the differences between its DB and LDAP backends,
for example.
