No luck with VFS module examples

Unfortunately the vfs example modules have bit rotted away quite
a bit.  I did start to fix them but got distracted somewhere.

Most of the problems you describe are due to this.  If I get some
spare time on the weekend I'll have a go at fixing things up as
there seems to be a bit of interest in the vfs stuff at the moment.
