SAM question

I am working on a project which uses Samba, among other services, to provide
access to storage. Recently, I have seen discussion about the LDAP support
in Samba. I also noticed RFC 2307, which discusses using LDAP as NIS. I have
also recently struggled with winbind, which is intended to map Unix user IDs
to Windows user IDs.
What I want to know is: Is the direction of Samba/Unix development headed
toward using LDAP as the central user name service? Should I be trying to
support LDAP, and not be worrying about how to get winbind to work as a
distributed system?
