Okay - just tried "smbclient //localhost" and it didn't clear the lock.
The machine in question is a relatively busy busy server, and has
probably had several hundred new connections open since the lock was
taken out and the smbd that took it out quit (about 11 hours ago now).

I'd be delighted - any pointers on where to start?
