I was trying with the CVS version from this morning (I'd seen Jeremy's
comment), so that could explain it.

When I try to access the Permissions for a directory, in the samba log for
my PC I get:
[2001/06/18 17:05:18, 1] smbd/ipc.c:api_fd_reply(294)
  api_fd_reply: INVALID PIPE HANDLE: 0
[2001/06/18 17:05:18, 1] smbd/ipc.c:api_fd_reply(294)
  api_fd_reply: INVALID PIPE HANDLE: 0
[2001/06/18 17:05:18, 1] smbd/service.c:make_connection(633)
  MikePC (123.45.67.89) connect to service mike as user mike (uid=500,
gid=500) (pid 10279)
[2001/06/18 17:05:18, 1] smbd/service.c:close_cnum(673)
  MikePC (123.45.67.89) closed connection to service mike

Also, when (successfully) accessing a file's permissions, I get the
following logged (both from Win98 and NT4SP6) - I don't know if it cause for
concern with 2.2.1 forthcoming:
[2001/06/18 17:12:22, 1] smbd/service.c:make_connection(633)
