Yes, that works.  The file I have been testing with is bigfile.tar

[root at concert tempdir]# dd if=/dev/zero of=filename bs=1024 count=2600000
2600000+0 records in
2600000+0 records out
[root at concert tempdir]# ls
total 5.1G
drwxr-xr-x    4 chad     chad         4.0k Jun 12 15:38 .
drwx--x--x   18 chad     chad         4.0k Jun 12 11:39 ..
-rw-r--r--    1 chad     root         2.6G May 29 13:40 bigfile.tar
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root         2.5G Jun 12 15:49 filename
drwxr-xr-x    2 chad     chad         4.0k May  3 21:37 kernel
drwxr-xr-x    2 chad     chad         4.0k Jun  7 21:39 video
