I think MS just did us (and themselves) a disservice.

Slightly off topic I know and forgive me... but for the sake of completeness
the registry key to add Netbios Aliases in windows is:
HKEY_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters
The name of the key should be: OptionalNames
it is of type: REG_SZ
and its value is the string of the alias name e.g. "NewAlias"
Note that if you make it a type REG_MULTI_SZ, you can then have multiple
aliases.
I personally tried that on Windows NT 4.0 Server and successfully registered
an alias called "NewAlias" (yes I know it is very original :-)). I did the
registry change, rebooted the server (its only a test box) and then did an
nbtstat -n
which shows the new netbios name as registered.
HTH,
Regards,
Makis.

Martin,
Thanks for this valuable information. I tried to search for this key
in the Microsoft Knowledgebase and also the registry of Win2k.
Could you provide some information on where this key is supposed to be?

There is a reg key called OptionalNames that will let you add more names
for a server. This was never tested so use it at your own risk.

Right, but since Windows boxes do not allow aliases, the only two
options
are the 'real' service name and the *SMBSERVER generic name. Thus, two
connections max.
