Two stage login

Is it possible (in protocol) to use first encrypted password and if
autorization fail
use plain password?
It would be nice to login this way.
You can imagine situation where you have external password database
accessed
using PAM and you are still able to connect to samba without password
prompt
on NT workstation.
It is important if you have many samba servers and you need to attach
your workstation
to all of them.
