Severe browsing problems

I've been trying to help Konstantin Petrakakis get Samba 2.2.2 working, but
to no avail. He finally solved his browsing problems by backing the Samba
server down from 2.2.2 to 2.2.1a.

Basically, he has his client machines spread over 2 workgroups; they are a
mixture of Windows 9x and NT/2K machines. With Samba as the LMB and DMB, one
of the workgroups shows up as a browseable group of servers; the other
workgroup is empty.

I had him check into all of the usual stuff about blocked ports at routers
(no problems), having an LMB (Samba is it), having a DMB (Samba again),
having a WINS server (that's Samba, too). We tried all the tricks I knew and
none worked.

He doesn't have any Windows servers installed, but obviously his Windows
clients can be browse masters, which is probably why browsing works for him
when he tells Samba not to be a LMB or DMB.

What changed in Samba between 2.2.1a and 2.2.2 in the browsing area?

Thanks
PG
