Double password from Samba client

We've seen Session Setup & X SMBs from Samba clients which have double
clear passwords concatentated to each other, one in lower case and the
other in upper case.  Our server treats this as one long password and
rejects it.  Our customer says that Windows NT servers accept this type of
password.  Where is it documented that SMB or CIFS servers should deal with
this double password?
