trouble w/setting up new users

Hello,

I am new to the SAMBA world, so please bear with me.
I've added a new user to the smbpasswd file.  From my PC, I can map the
network drive needed as the NEW user.  However, I can not do the same thing
from his PC.  The error is 'unknown user or bad password'.
I have verified that he is physically connected.
I am running SAMBA version 1.9.
Should I consider upgrading, and if so, what are the 'gotchas' that I have
to look out for?
