Machine accounts and unix UIDs

Is the Unix UID used for anything in the machine account?

Could I do this:

useradd MACHINE$
smbpasswd -a -m MACHINE
userdel MACHINE$

<join domain, everything works>

Or does that account also have to exist in the passwd file. I read somewhere
a long time ago that the uid is only used to make sure the rid is unique for
machine accounts. For user accounts, it's used in a set*id call, obviously.
