Actually, you really should have read W. Richard Stevens (now
sadly deceased) "Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment"
before doing any of this.

*RUN* (don't walk :-) to your nearest technical bookstore 
and buy this book.

Then buy all his other books for good measure :-).
