unix password sync

Hi All,

Should unix password sync work as an option to synchronise samba and unix
passwords without using other options such as PAM?

I'm trying to use the unix password sync option (attempted both on Samba 2.0.3
and 2.0.7. This option states that when a Samba user password is changed in
SWAT, this password change should be synchronised with changing the unix user
password.

At present all this option is managing to do is throw up errors. When a user
changes their own password in SWAT (logging in as themselves) an error is
thrown up stating that the password change has been rejected due to an invalid
password:

machine 127.0.0.1 rejected the password change: Error was : The specified
password is invalid.
The passwd for <user> has NOT been changed.

The passwords chosen should be valid!

When logging on as root to change a user password, it seems to have more effect.
The "user password changed" message comes back. Unfortunately the effect
seems to be that SWAT and unix still only accept the old password, logging into
the user's pc will not accept the old password but will accept the new one.

The only way to fix this seems to be to turn off the unix password sync, and
then re-change the password again. Then logging onto SWAT and logging onto the
client pc will have the same password.

Changing samba passwords in SWAT without unix password sync being on works fine.

Any ideas??

Am I mistaken in trying to change the password in SWAT? Should it be changed
in the normal windows manner?
