smbclient creates bad tar files

I tried the exact same steps you did and I only got 1 file and this
 #tar -tvf temp1.tar |grep test.doc
-rw-r--r-- 0/0          126464 2000-06-21 12:34:02 ./testdir/test.doc
tar: Skipping to next file header
#

I'm in a basic RH 6.1 setup with Gnutar (not sure which version but whatever
comes with RH 6.1) and Samba 2.0.7
I do not think it is my tar as I can tar up files  and -A them together from
within my computer perfectly fine, just happends with files I pull from
smbclient.
