creating a windows .lnk file from within linux

Does anyone know how to create a windows .lnk file programatically
on linux? Or any pointers to info on the format of those files?

As new shares are created I want to put .lnk files in users' home
dirs that point to \\server\new_share_name. Assume that they can't
browse and see the shares any other way.
