samba 2.06 - basic connectivity/operation broken

I have not been able to get swat working, and when I type smbclient -L
localhost,
I get the following response

Added interface ip=my ip address bcast= bcast ip address nmask=255.255.0.0
read_socket_with_timeout timeout read. read error = Broken Pipe
session request to LOCALHOST failed
read_socekt_with_timeout: timeout read read error. Connection reset by peer.

Does anyone know what these error messages mean ?

I'm running RH 6.1.
