smbclient put can't handle large files > 4GB

you are right, smbclient doesn't attempt to use the 64 bit SMB
extensions and thus will fail beyond 4GB, regardless of whether the
machines support 64 bit offsets.

Patches are welcome, as long as they are reasonably clean and
portable.
