writeable setting in [printers] section

Hello everyone. I was just wondering whether there was any particular
reason behind setting the writeable parameter in the [printers] share
to be true. The smb.conf manual page gives an example:

   [printers]
        path = /usr/spool/public
        writeable = no
        guest ok = yes
        printable = yes

The setting of the writeable parameter doesn't seem to have any effect
on access to the printer so what does setting writeable = no actually
do?

Regards,

Tim.
